CNN: Haitians Self-Deporting to Canada After Trump Ends ‘Temporary’ Amnesty

Haitian migrants are returning to Canada after the U.S. government ended their Temporary Protected Status (TPS). This status was initially granted due to a devastating earthquake in Haiti over 15 years ago.

The U.S. Supreme Court allowed the Trump administration to end TPS for Haitians, prompting many to leave the U.S. voluntarily to avoid deportation.

Reports indicate a rise in Haitians attempting to self-deport, with Canada being a preferred destination.

During Trump’s first term, routes between New York and Montreal became common escape paths, but the rules for seeking asylum in Canada have become stricter since then.

Despite the risks, many Haitians are determined to try relocating to Canada instead of returning to Haiti.

The Canada Border Services Agency notes that Haitians are the leading nationality seeking asylum at the Canada-U.S. border.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has begun repatriating Haitians, including individuals with serious criminal backgrounds.

The revocation of TPS has pushed Haitian migrants to consider returning to Canada despite the challenges, reflecting a desperate response to their changing legal status in the U.S.
