Victor Davis Hanson on Mamdani and Other DSA Figures: ‘They Left Failed States, But Want To Reenact The Disaster They Fled From’

Victor Davis Hanson, a conservative scholar, recently spoke on the Sean Hannity Show regarding the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and their leadership, which he claims is primarily composed of wealthy individuals who have emigrated from unsuccessful states.

Background of DSA Leaders: Hanson pointed out that prominent figures in the DSA, like Mamdani, Ilhan Omar, and Rashida Tlaib, come from wealthy backgrounds in their countries of origin but advocate for policies that resemble the failures they escaped from.

Wealth and Privilege: He emphasized the contrast between their affluent lifestyles—such as owning luxury cars and large homes—and the socialist ideologies they promote. For example, he cited individuals like Hasan Piker, who lives in a nearly $3 million house and drives a Porsche, arguing that the DSA’s leadership is not representative of the working class.

Demographics of DSA Membership: According to Hanson, around 85% of Democratic Socialists identify as white, and many hold college degrees. This shows a demographic skew that does not align with the traditional base of socialism, which is often linked to working-class and minority communities.

Political Implications: Hanson claimed these leaders avoid explicitly identifying as socialist or communist in order to maintain political viability. He suggested that public acknowledgment of such labels would hurt their political prospects outside liberal urban centers.

Victor Davis Hanson’s commentary critiques the DSA’s leadership as out of touch with working-class realities, pointing to a disconnect between their wealth and the socialist ideals they promote. Hanson’s assertions raise questions about the authenticity of socialist movements in contemporary politics, especially when led by individuals from privileged backgrounds.
