Increasing Number Of Ivy League Students Can’t Even Read, So Let’s Stop Calling Them ‘Elite’

A concerning trend about literacy levels, especially among high school and college students in America, has emerged. A recent article highlights how students struggle with reading, exemplified by a Harvard student using ChatGPT to simplify a novel.

1. Decline in Reading Skills: The article shares that many students are not reading full books in high school, often completing only one or two a year. Teachers are responding by assigning short excerpts instead of entire texts.

2. Modern Reading Challenges: The Harvard student found difficulty with "A Clockwork Orange," mistaking its language for “Old English. ” Educators note that students encounter more challenges in understanding complex texts and may view them as barriers to information.

3. Educator Perspectives: Teachers are witnessing a decrease in students' motivation to read. A survey indicated that 58% of educators observed that at least a quarter of their students struggle with basic reading skills, attributing this to lack of motivation and fluency.

4. Literacy Statistics: A study revealed that 21% of American adults are functionally illiterate, highlighting a broader literacy crisis.

5. State Responses: In response to declining literacy, some states like Texas are adopting new curricula that require students to read classic literature to improve reading skills.

The current educational approach seems to be contributing to a literacy crisis, as fewer students engage with full-length texts, leading to concerns about their reading abilities upon graduation, even from prestigious universities. Without significant changes in teaching methods and curriculum, a generation of graduates may struggle with basic reading tasks.
