Blue city’s public schools light money on fire only for students to keep failing, report shows

A new report reveals that nearly half of New York City's public schools have significant student failure rates, despite the high spending on education. This situation raises concerns about school accountability and the effectiveness of the grading system.

● Failure Rates: Over 900 public schools in NYC had less than half of their students passing math and reading state exams in 2024.

● Spending: NYC spent $36,293 per student, which is more than double the national average of $17,619. Overall, the city allocated $40 billion to education in 2024.

● Student Enrollment: Around 43% of NYC public school students attend schools where most fail in math and reading. The proportion of elementary, middle, and high school students in failing schools is increasing: 34% in elementary, 49% in middle school, and 62% in high school.

● Grading System Concerns: The report criticizes NYC’s grading system for allowing most students to pass courses without mastering the material.

● Teacher Evaluation: Despite 98% of teachers being rated as effective, the report suggests that the assessment system is not accurately reflecting school performance.

The report highlights systemic failures in NYC schools, emphasizing the need for honest evaluation and accountability measures. It argues that despite substantial financial investment, student performance continues to decline in many schools, prompting a call for change.
