The Backyard Problem of Data Centers

With AI technology rapidly integrating into daily life, Americans are increasingly using chatbots like ChatGPT. However, this surge brings significant challenges related to the infrastructure needed to support these technologies.

● A Pew Research survey from February 2026 revealed that 49% of U. S. adults use chatbots, a rise from 33% in 2024. About 25% use them daily.

● Despite the popularity of AI, there is strong opposition to data center construction, with Gallup reporting that 70% of Americans oppose such developments in their communities.

● Recent polling from Reuters/Ipsos found that only 33% approve of rapid data center expansion, and just 14% support local construction.

● Concerns include increased electricity costs, a significant demand for water, and additional strain on power grids. Many residents also complain about the constant noise from these facilities.

● A University of Texas poll indicated that 56% of voters oppose data centers in their communities, reflecting the heightened local impact of these growing infrastructures.

● Texas Governor Greg Abbott has proposed measures to protect residents from the financial burdens of these constructions, emphasizing the need for regulations on water usage and power facility development.

As AI technology continues to grow, the local implications of supporting infrastructure need to be addressed. Without solutions that consider the concerns of affected communities, acceptance of data centers may decline significantly.
