GM replaces more than 1,000 workers with 50 robots at flagship Detroit plant: ‘We’re disgusted’

General Motors (GM) has made a significant change at its flagship Detroit assembly plant, Factory Zero, by eliminating over 1,000 jobs and replacing them with 50 robots, known as collaborative robots (cobots). This decision has sparked outrage among labor unions.

1. Replacement of Workers: GM has shifted to using cobots in its assembly process due to decreased demand for electric vehicles (EVs), resulting in job losses for more than 1,000 workers.

2. Technology Implementation: The company states that these cobots are crucial for maintaining competitiveness and improving safety and ergonomic conditions for remaining workers on the assembly line.

3. Union Response: The United Auto Workers (UAW) union has expressed strong discontent, claiming the move is a cost-cutting measure that further diminishes the jobs of union members. UAW Local 22 President James Cotton highlighted concerns over the reduction of manpower and the implications for worker safety with robots operating alongside humans.

4. History of Labor Efficiency: The number of labor hours required to produce a car has dropped significantly by 50% to 70% since the 1980s, yet wages for union workers have increased. The UAW is preparing for stronger negotiations in the upcoming 2028 contract discussions to protect jobs and wages.

5. Concerns about Automation: UAW President Shawn Fain voiced that the increasing use of automation, like AI and cobots, is leading to a "fight for humanity," emphasizing that the enhanced productivity driven by automation should benefit the workers, not eliminate their jobs.

6. Current Financial State of GM: Despite the layoffs, GM reported a 22% profit increase in the first quarter of 2026, amounting to $4.25 billion, suggesting that the company remains financially strong even amid these significant changes.

The replacement of a large number of workers with robots at GM's Factory Zero has raised serious concerns regarding employment and worker safety. The UAW is actively opposing these changes, claiming they are unjust and detrimental to union workers as GM continues to automate processes. The situation reflects ongoing tensions between labor forces and technological advancements in the automotive industry.
