Dem congressional candidate charged with terrorist threats after pulling gun on government officials

Kirill Basin, a Democratic congressional candidate from Hawaii, was arrested for allegedly pulling a gun on government officials. The incident raised concerns about his behavior, which has become increasingly erratic.

• On May 31, 2026, Basin, 40, reportedly threatened two Maui County employees after entering a government building in Wailuku. He fled the scene but was arrested later at his home on charges of terroristic threats in the first degree.

• Prior to the arrest, Basin made bizarre claims on Instagram, stating that police had tortured him for 14 hours and he had filed a lawsuit against them alleging severe abuse during his custody. He represented himself in this lawsuit.

• His behavior had been troubling in the days leading up to the incident. Just two days before, he was removed from a town hall meeting after an argument and later confronted a council member's assistant in a parking lot, leading to further police involvement.

• The assistant, Jared Agtunong, filed for a temporary restraining order against Basin shortly after the incident, detailing unsettling text messages he received from Basin. A judge approved the restraining order within two hours of filing.

• Basin had a previous arrest on May 2 for disorderly conduct, adding to a growing list of concerning behaviors.

The arrest of Kirill Basin highlights serious issues regarding his mental health and conduct, culminating in accusations of violence and erratic behavior. The unfolding situation poses questions about his fitness for public office and the safety of those around him.
