America's Blue Collar Workers Shouldn’t Be the Fall Guy for Everyone Else’s Prosperity

Bill Clinton's signing of the NAFTA trade agreement is viewed as a significant error that negatively affected American blue-collar workers and the Democratic Party. The effects of free trade agreements have contributed to the discontent that gave rise to Donald Trump's presidency.

● The middle class has faced job losses and stagnant wages since the 1970s, largely due to globalization and trade agreements.

● In the 2016 presidential campaign, trade agreements became a critical issue, with Trump criticizing them.

● While automation has contributed to job loss, trade agreements allow American companies to outsource jobs overseas, leading to the unemployment of American workers.

● American multinational corporations have thrived while transferring jobs abroad, resulting in increased corporate profits without wage growth for workers.

● Competitiveness with low-wage countries is often cited as a reason for stagnant wages, but profits are substantial enough to allow for wage increases without raising product prices.

The current situation where middle-class blue-collar workers bear the burden of corporate profit maximization is unsustainable. A suggested resolution is to increase wages for these workers while adjusting CEO compensation, allowing for a fairer balance without harming the economy.
