House Democrat Introduces Articles Of Impeachment Against Supreme Court Justice

Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) has proposed articles of impeachment against Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, claiming he has committed high crimes and misdemeanors by violating the Constitution and failing to uphold his duties.

• Cohen's allegations include that Roberts' actions favor partisanship and the wealthy, contravening the impartiality expected from the Supreme Court.

• Cohen expressed disappointment that the Supreme Court, once viewed as a respected institution, has become politically biased, undermining its constitutional obligations.

• He emphasized the need for due process and equal protection under the law, stating that inconsistent decisions have compromised the Court's credibility.

• He specifically criticized the Supreme Court's 2024 ruling that granted President Donald Trump absolute immunity while performing his duties, asserting that it placed a person above the law.

• Cohen's impeachment resolution has not garnered any co-sponsors and is unlikely to move forward due to the Republican majority in the House, which suggests frustration among Democrats regarding the conservative majority on the Court.

• The proposal follows redistricting in Tennessee that Cohen argues was designed to weaken his electoral position.

Cohen's introduction of impeachment articles against Chief Justice Roberts signals growing discontent among Democrats regarding the Supreme Court's perceived partisanship. While the likelihood of advancing these articles is low, it highlights significant political tensions surrounding judicial actions and their implications for representation and governance.
