Biden DHS Released Nearly 90 Percent of Border Migrants Through Parole Program

A recent report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) reveals that the Biden administration has utilized parole authority to release nearly 90% of migrants encountered at the southern border during peak times of its catch-and-release policies.

• The report indicates a significant expansion of "humanitarian parole" by the Department of Homeland Security between early 2021 and January 2025.

• Historically, parole authority was used minimally by previous administrations, granting it to only 3% to 28% of border encounters in fiscal years 2019 and 2020.

• The number of paroles surged starting in summer 2021, reaching a peak of 89% in December 2022, but saw a decline after that.

• The GAO raised concerns about the challenges faced by federal immigration enforcement in tracking released migrants due to insufficient information about their parole status.

• Conservatives argue that this heavy reliance on parole undermines immigration enforcement at the border.

The findings indicate dramatic changes in immigration policy under President Biden, with ongoing debates about the effectiveness and future of such policies within the Democratic Party.
