Ottawa Spends $8.1M on Foreign STEM Interns While Canadian Students Are Shut Out

A biomedical engineering student in Mississauga struggled to secure a summer research position despite applying to over forty labs in Ontario. Her experience reflects a broader issue faced by many Canadian students in the STEM field, where opportunities appear to favor international students instead.

• The student’s efforts included submitting references and participating in virtual interviews, but she received no offers or even rejections, leaving her academic and career prospects uncertain.

• In contrast, international students, particularly from India, benefit from the Mitacs Globalink initiative, which provides significant funding for their placements in Canada, amounting to $24.3 million from public funds over a funding cycle from 2021 to 2025.

• The influx of international students has outpaced the growth of domestic research funding, leading to increased competition for available positions among Canadian students, many of whom apply to numerous labs to secure a spot.

• There is a disparity in financial support and resources for international students compared to those available for Canadian students, resulting in a detrimental impact on local talent development and research capacity.

• Current funding priorities favor international placements, leading to underutilized lab space and exclusion of Canadian students from basic research opportunities.

The focus on international student placements raises concerns about the lack of support for young Canadian researchers. Taxpayers, who fund these initiatives, perceive the inequity, as local students continue to face barriers in pursuing research careers in Canada, undermining the country's innovation landscape. The conversation about a STEM shortage is complicated by these funding choices, which appear to prioritize foreign interest over domestic needs.
