The Decline of Trust in the News

Modern journalism faces significant challenges, primarily due to journalists themselves. Bias and poor reporting lead to widespread distrust among the public. While these issues are important, they do not encompass the entirety of journalism's failures.

1. Historical Context: Eric Burns illustrates in his book, "Infamous Scribblers," that even during the founding of America, journalism struggled with credibility. George Washington referred to reporters as “infamous scribblers,” highlighting long-standing issues.

2. Perception of Reliability: In the past, particularly the 1960s and 70s, many believed journalism was reliable. However, political bias has always existed and has increased over time.

3. Role of Journalists: Reporters should objectively present facts without infusing personal opinions. They ought to maintain a critical stance towards the government.

4. Media Bias: Major news outlets, including ABC, NBC, and CBS, often take sides on political issues, undermining their role as unbiased informers. For example, a study found that 92% of news stories about President Trump were negative in the initial months of his second term.

5. Intellectual Laziness: Reporters often show intellectual laziness, conforming to prevailing narratives in newsrooms. The pressure to compete for viewership promotes sensationalism and “click bait” journalism.

6. Declining Popularity of Print Media: Newspapers are losing readership, with many relying on social media, which often spreads misinformation.

7. Importance of Good Reporting: Effective journalism requires excellent editing and a focus on fundamental reporting questions. However, journalism education does not always emphasize these skills effectively.

Despite historical issues and ongoing biases, the core challenge remains: ensuring journalists adhere to rigorous reporting standards and maintain objectivity to regain public trust. The market dynamics dictate improvements in journalism, but solutions are complex and not guaranteed.
