Supreme Court allows California to use congressional map benefitting Democrats

The U. S. Supreme Court has allowed California to use a new congressional map that is expected to give Democrats an advantage in the upcoming elections. This decision came after a request from California Republicans to maintain the old map during legal challenges was denied.

1. The court rejected a request from California Republicans to keep the previous congressional map while they challenged the new one.

2. This ruling occurred two months after a related decision allowed Texas to implement a map favoring Republicans.

3. California's new map was approved by voters through Proposition 50, which amended the state constitution to permit its use from 2026 to 2030.

4. Legal challenges claimed the new map unfairly favored Latino voters, but a district court found no significant racial motivation, emphasizing partisan motives instead.

5. The challengers sought Supreme Court intervention before the candidate filing deadline on February 9, but the court declined to act.

The Supreme Court's decision enables California to proceed with its revised congressional map, reinforcing the ongoing political battle over redistricting in the U. S.
