Senate departs Washington for the week without DHS funding bill

The Senate has left Washington for the President's Day weekend without passing a funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which is set to shut down until a new agreement is reached.

• The Senate adjourned on Thursday, February 12, 2026, without approving a DHS funding bill. This will lead to a shutdown of the department starting Saturday.

• The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has warned that the shutdown may delay travel times due to the absence of pay for its more than 63,000 employees.

• It is uncertain whether TSA employees will receive back pay after the funding agreement.

• TSA’s workforce is vital, as over 99% reside in communities nationwide, and the shutdown may lead to high attrition and increased absenteeism among officers, resulting in longer wait times and canceled flights at airports.

• Other federal departments are not affected by this shutdown, as their funding has been secured.

• Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will still operate normally, as it received an additional $75 billion for its budget last year, emphasizing its status as essential for public safety.

• The Senate plans to reconvene on February 23, but members may be called back early if a DHS funding deal is struck.

The situation is urgent, as the shutdown poses significant risks to TSA operations and travel across the country. A prompt resolution is needed from Congress to avoid further complications for the DHS.
