More Than 550 Commercial Driving Schools to Close After Checks: Transportation Department

On February 18, the Department of Transportation announced the removal of certifications for over 550 U. S. commercial driving schools that train truckers and bus drivers due to serious violations.

• Investigations found that many schools had unqualified instructors, used fraudulent addresses, and improperly trained students for hazardous materials transportation.

• The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration sent over 300 investigators to conduct more than 1,400 safety operations, leading to 448 proposed removals and 109 schools voluntarily withdrawing.

• Allegations included the use of unlicensed instructors, mismatched vehicles for training, incomplete student testing, and failure to meet state safety standards.

• Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy emphasized the need for strict compliance to improve road safety.

• An additional 97 schools are still under investigation, and new rules for non-citizens applying for commercial driver's licenses will take effect in September 2025.

These actions are part of a broader effort to enhance safety in the trucking industry and hold training providers accountable.
