Excuse Me, but California Dems Stole How Much Again?

California Republican gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton has raised serious accusations regarding the misuse of funds generated from the state's Cannabis Tax. Instead of supporting youth drug prevention as intended, these funds are allegedly being diverted to support left-wing political activism.

1. Misallocation of Funds: Hilton claims that around $370 million collected from the Cannabis Tax, which was meant to fund youth drug prevention, is instead financing activist organizations.

2. Role of Nonprofit: The Center at Sierra Health Foundation’s Elevate Youth program is cited as a key player in this scheme. This nonprofit has seen its revenue skyrocket from $11.8 million in 2018 to $197 million in 2024, with the CEO reportedly earning over $600,000.

3. Distribution of Funds: The center allegedly distributes Cannabis Tax revenues to various non-governmental organizations (NGOs) like the Jakara Movement and Young Invincibles. Critics argue that this process is essentially a way to route taxpayer money into political organizing rather than addressing drug issues.

4. Government Oversight Issues: The allegations suggest a lack of proper oversight as the nonprofit manages fund distribution without going through formal government procurement processes, creating a “slush fund” for political purposes.

5. Connection to Political Leaders: The report mentions Governor Gavin Newsom's solicitation of behested payments from the Sierra Health Foundation, suggesting a troubling relationship where political support may be financially reciprocated.

These allegations, if proven true, indicate a significant misappropriation of taxpayer funds in California, raising concerns about transparency and accountability in governmental financial practices. The funds intended for youth substance abuse prevention appear to have been diverted for partisan purposes, highlighting issues within the state's political landscape.
