DC Mayor Bowser Asks Trump Administration: Help Clean Waste from Potomac River

Washington D. C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has declared a local emergency following a significant sewage spill into the Potomac River. This incident has raised concerns about public health and environmental impact.

• On January 19, a major sewer pipe (72 inches in diameter) collapsed in Maryland, leading to the discharge of hundreds of millions of gallons of sewage into the Potomac River.

• The sewer line, known as the Potomac Interceptor, previously managed up to 60 million gallons of waste daily from surrounding areas to a water treatment plant in D. C.

• Mayor Bowser is requesting federal assistance, specifically a Presidential Emergency Disaster Declaration, to fund cleanup efforts and reimburse the costs incurred by D. C. Water and the District.

• The mayor’s requests include:

• Coordination among federal agencies and affected states.

• Technical support for water quality monitoring and environmental assessments.

• Collaboration with the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers to review local water treatment infrastructure.

• Support for ongoing projects aimed at reducing sewer overflows.

• President Trump commented on the situation, urging local officials in Maryland, Virginia, and D. C. to act quickly to resolve the issue and fix the environmental hazard caused by the spill.

The sewage spill poses a serious environmental risk and public health concern. Mayor Bowser's emergency declaration and request for federal support highlight the urgency of addressing this disaster. The public is advised to avoid contact with the Potomac River during the ongoing response efforts.
