American radicals borrow the rhetoric of 1776 while channeling the chaos of 1789—and the mobs they summon won’t take orders.

The American and French Revolutions, though occurring around the same time, have often been confused in popular thought despite their significant differences. This confusion has implications for current American political discourse and actions.

1. Historical Context: The American Revolution was primarily a War of Independence, focused on asserting existing rights rather than a complete societal upheaval. In contrast, the French Revolution was a total rebellion against society, driven by anger and a desire for radical change.

2. Consequences of the Revolutions: The American Revolution led to the creation of a nation that valued liberty and innovation, contributing positively to global stability. The French Revolution, however, fostered significant violence and authoritarianism, influencing the ideologies of future totalitarian regimes.

3. Contemporary Misinterpretations: Many American intellectuals and politicians conflate the two revolutions, wanting to adopt the American Revolution's nobility while embracing the violent tendencies of the French Revolution.

4. Current Political Rhetoric: Accusations of Nazism against Trump supporters and rhetoric against Republicans reflect a dangerous trend. Some politicians threaten legal actions resembling post-war retribution against political enemies, recalling the extreme measures taken during the French Revolution.

5. Historical Ignorance: Politicians and activists often misquote historical figures and principles in support of their actions, showing a lack of understanding of the actual events and ideologies behind both revolutions.

6. Warnings for Today: Politicians who incite mobs for political gain may not have control over them afterwards. The historical lessons of the French Revolution suggest that the violence unleashed can become uncontrollable and may ultimately backfire.

Today’s political climate in America, marked by extreme rhetoric and actions, reflects an alarming resemblance to the chaotic and violent dynamics of the French Revolution. It cautions against the reckless unleashing of societal forces that may result in unintended and severe consequences for all involved.
