New York Times Reaches Whole New Level of Willful Blindness

The New York Times recently reported on violent attacks in Nigeria that resulted in the deaths of over 42 people. However, the paper faced criticism for downplaying the religious motivations behind these attacks, which are increasingly seen as part of a broader anti-Christian campaign.

1. Recent Attacks:

Armed gunmen attacked two villages in Nigeria, including a market in Kasuwa Daji, where civilians were shot and kidnapped. Additional victims were reported in a separate attack in Mondag village.

2. Media Response:

The New York Times described the claim of "Christian genocide" as a mischaracterization of the ongoing violence against Christians in Nigeria, citing unnamed analysts without providing evidence for their opinions.

3. Evidence Ignored:

Despite evidence indicating the religious nature of the violence—such as targeted attacks on churches and priests—the Times opted to dismiss these attacks without sufficient analysis or acknowledgment of the claims made by other sources, including comments from local religious leaders.

4. Government Comments:

The Nigerian government noted that attackers were suspected terrorists fleeing U. S. airstrikes against groups linked to the Islamic State, underscoring the religious intent behind the violence.

5. Statements from Experts:

Local and international commentators, including U. S. lawmakers, have consistently highlighted the plight of Christians in Nigeria, asserting that they are targeted due to their faith. Despite this, the Times has sometimes implied that these claims lack credible support.

6. Broader Impact:

The repeated downplaying of such claims by prominent media outlets like the New York Times may contribute to a lack of awareness about the severity of the situation and enable continued violence against Christians in Nigeria.

The New York Times' handling of the violence in Nigeria raises concerns about media representation of religiously motivated attacks. Critics argue that acknowledging the evidence of targeted violence against Christians is crucial for addressing the ongoing crisis effectively.
