Grants to Combat School Violence Redirected to Defray Costs of Illegal Immigration

A recent report from Open the Books highlights the misuse of federal grants intended for school violence prevention. Instead of focusing on safety measures, funds are being redirected to address issues arising from an influx of migrant families in schools.

• The Department of Justice's STOP School Violence Program, established after the 2018 Parkland school shooting, allocated around $1 million to Monroe County, Florida. This grant is meant to address violence but is instead being used to manage challenges related to illegal immigration.

• The influx of migrant families has reportedly led to a significant uptick in juvenile crime, straining local resources like law enforcement and schools. Specific statistics show a 119% increase in school arrests over two years, with a notable percentage of offenders being immigrant youth.

• The Monroe County School District plans to use the grant for various initiatives, such as hiring bilingual teachers, providing therapy for students, and enhancing parent involvement through a liaison program.

• Open the Books determined that several grants totaling $13.5 million have been directed toward supporting foreign students rather than enhancing safety measures like security systems in schools.

• Critics argue that these funds should have been utilized for direct safety improvements instead of adapting to the needs of migrant students.

The report raises concerns about how federal funds meant for school safety are being allocated, emphasizing the need for a focus on tangible safety measures rather than addressing the pressures from immigration.
