Dems Planning Govt. Shutdown Over ICE Funding

Some Democratic lawmakers are withholding support for funding the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) unless new restrictions on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) are included. They are concerned about ICE's operational practices.

• Several Democrats are pushing for changes that require ICE agents to have warrants for arrests, wear identification, and limit firearm use in civilian situations.

• This push follows an incident on January 8, where an ICE agent shot and killed Renee Good in Minneapolis.

• House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer are demanding reforms linked to Democratic support for DHS funding.

• There is an ongoing stalemate on the DHS appropriations bill, with a January 30 deadline approaching to prevent a partial government shutdown.

• Republicans control the Senate and are unlikely to accept the proposed changes from Democrats.

• Protests against ICE have escalated, leading to injuries; notably, a protester in Santa Ana was left permanently blind after being hit by a projectile fired by law enforcement during a demonstration.

Negotiations for a budget deal are ongoing, but tensions between parties continue as they seek to balance funding needs and operational reforms.
