Chuck Schumer Says Democrats Will Reverse Most of DOGE Cuts

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced that the Democrats plan to reverse many of the budget cuts made by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

• During a discussion at the Center for American Progress, Schumer responded to concerns about cuts to the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) made by DOGE.

• He stated that the current budget plans aim to restore most of these cuts and increase funding for several programs beyond earlier levels.

• The final text of the Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development bill for 2026 is still under development, with a proposed increase of $5 billion in funding compared to 2025.

• In February, HUD Secretary Scott Turner announced the establishment of a DOGE task force that identified $260 million in savings.

• This task force, made up of HUD employees, is tasked with optimizing the budget and the effectiveness of the department's programs.

• The task force also cancelled $4 million in contracts that were intended for diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.

Schumer's statements highlight the Democrats' commitment to restoring previous funding levels for HUD while addressing budget efficiency through the DOGE task force.
