China's 200,000-Satellite Filing Sparks Fears Of An Orbital Power Grab

China has filed requests to reserve orbital positions for nearly 200,000 satellites, raising concerns about its potential control over space. These applications were submitted by the Institute of Radio Spectrum Utilisation and Technological Innovation, detailing two large satellite networks, CTC-1 and CTC-2. If successful, this plan would surpass SpaceX’s Starlink initiative and potentially limit access to rival satellite operators.

The specifics of the satellites' roles remain unclear, leading to speculation about military applications, especially as the technology could support defense systems. This aligns with the growing U. S.-China competition in space. Experts note the importance of satellites in modern warfare, and the unusual movements of some Chinese satellites have raised alarms among U. S. officials.

Despite the ambitious proposal, many analysts doubt China can execute it. They argue that the filing may be more about securing space for the future rather than indicating immediate plans for construction, as China would require substantial resources to launch a vast number of satellites consistently. Concerns about commercial satellite proliferation have also been expressed at international forums.
