Century Aluminum Co. from Illinois has teamed up with Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) to build a new primary aluminum production plant in Inola, Oklahoma. This will be the first new aluminum smelter in the U. S. since 1980.
• The new plant is expected to produce 750,000 tonnes of aluminum annually, significantly increasing U. S. aluminum production capacity.
• It will create 1,000 permanent jobs at the facility and provide 4,000 jobs during the construction phase.
• Currently, about 85% of U. S. aluminum needs are met by imports. This plant aims to boost domestic aluminum supply and create jobs, enhancing local industry expertise.
• China's production of primary aluminum was the highest in the world in 2025.
• The establishment of this plant aligns with policies from the Trump administration, which introduced tariffs on aluminum imports to support local production and manufacturing.
• Construction will start by the end of the year, with production beginning by the end of the decade.
• EGA will own 60% of the joint venture, utilizing advanced smelting technology. This project is expected to benefit industries such as aerospace, automotive, construction, and national defense.
The Inola aluminum plant represents significant advancements in U. S. aluminum production, promoting job creation and reducing reliance on imports while showcasing efforts to revitalize the aluminum industry domestically.
