Charleston’s Slow Drowning: A Managed Disaster Tidal Reality
By Staff Writer
Charleston experiences 14–18 sunny-day floods annually triple the rate from the year 2000. The cause is a mixture of:
Natural sea‑level rise about 3 mm/year regionally,
Land subsidence from over‑pumping groundwater, and
Uncontrolled urban expansion sealing wetlands beneath asphalt.
Every new development promises resilience features raised roadways, artificial drainage retention ponds, or engineered dunes. Yet, according to former Army Corps engineers, 80 % of projects worsen downstream flooding, transferring water pressure rather than reducing it.
