Letitia James, the attorney general of New York, is criticized for her aggressive legal approach towards former President Trump and her perceived attacks on those who oppose progressive views, especially concerning transgender issues.
James has faced backlash for filing a fraud case against Trump with no clear victims, resulting in an excessive fine that was overturned by an appeals court. Recently, a school board chair named Kerry Wachter has sued James, claiming she threatened to remove board members for expressing differing views on transgender participation in women's sports. Wachter alleges that James's office instructed her to silence speakers at board meetings who opposed allowing transgender athletes to use facilities of their identified gender.
James stated that school board members could be removed for neglecting their duties or violating student protections under the Dignity for All Students Act. However, legal experts argue that the First Amendment protects discussions on these topics, regardless of state laws. Critics assert that James uses her position to intimidate political opponents and suppress open dialogue, and there is hope that the lawsuit against her will succeed.
