Colorado Faces Federal Funding Cut Over Issuance Of Commercial Driver's Licenses To Illegals

Colorado could lose up to $24 million in federal highway funding due to issuing commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs) to noncitizens, violating federal regulations.

• The announcement came from U. S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy following an audit showing 22% of Colorado’s CDLs to noncitizens violated laws.

• Duffy expressed concerns about unqualified drivers endangering public safety and criticized Colorado for delaying necessary internal reviews.

• If requirements are not met, Colorado’s entire CDL program may be decertified. Currently, new issuance and renewals for non-domiciled CDLs are paused until compliance is confirmed.

• Other states like New York and California are facing similar scrutiny and potential funding cuts related to CDL issuance, with California freezing $160 million in aid due to licensing issues.

• Recent tragic incidents, including fatal crashes caused by unlicensed drivers, have heightened focus on ensuring qualified drivers on the road.

• The crackdown on improper licensing has received support from American truckers who prioritize safety.

Colorado must address these CDL violations swiftly to avoid significant federal funding cuts and ensure public safety on the roads.
