A California man, Peter Karasev, has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for preplanned attacks on the power grid. At 39 years old, he was convicted for two bombings targeting electrical transformers operated by Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) in late 2022 and early 2023.
These attacks resulted in over $200,000 worth of damages, disrupted power for more than 1,500 homes, and endangered lives, especially for those reliant on electricity for medical needs. U. S. District Judge Beth Labson Freeman underscored Karasev’s dangerous knowledge of explosives.
Federal authorities are committed to protecting critical infrastructure, with U. S. Attorney Craig H. Missakian emphasizing harsh penalties for those jeopardizing public safety. The FBI's Counterterrorism Division collaborated with local law enforcement on this investigation. This case highlights the ongoing importance of safeguarding America’s energy systems against threats, a responsibility requiring vigilance and cooperation at all government levels.
