Not So Fast, Newsom: California GOP Files Federal Voting Rights Suit to Block Prop 50 Congressional Maps

The California Republican Party and 19 plaintiffs have filed a lawsuit against Governor Gavin Newsom and Secretary of State Shirley Weber. They challenge the new Proposition 50 maps, claiming they are unconstitutional as they were created to favor Hispanic voters based on race.

• Lawsuit Details: The lawsuit was submitted to the United States District Court for the Central District of California. The plaintiffs are asking for a temporary injunction to stop the state from using the new maps until the case is resolved.

• Claims Against the Maps: The plaintiffs argue that the maps violate the 14th and 15th Amendments because they were drawn specifically to benefit Hispanic voters without sufficient justification or evidence.

• Mapping Process: The consultant responsible for the maps admitted to creating a "Latino District," which was previously eliminated, and modifying another district to enhance Latino influence by ensuring it comprises 35% Latino voters. The lawsuit argues that this does not comply with the requirements of the Voting Rights Act (VRA) and that evidence supporting the need for race-based districts is lacking.

• Political Context: Democrats claim the maps are meant to empower Latino voters, but the plaintiffs highlight that Latino voters in California have successfully elected candidates of their choice without needing specially drawn districts.

• Response from Newsom: Governor Newsom responded to the lawsuit dismissively, asserting that the suit does not hold merit.

The California Republican Party's lawsuit challenges the legitimacy of the new election maps, arguing they represent unconstitutional racial gerrymandering. The outcome could significantly impact the election landscape in California, with a court hearing anticipated soon.
