Newsom’s Ex-Chief Of Staff Indicted For Fraud Scheme Stealing Campaign Funds With Biden Official

Dana Williamson, California Governor Gavin Newsom's former chief of staff, has been indicted on 23 charges of fraud and false statements related to her manipulation of political campaign funds. It is alleged that she conspired with others to steal approximately $225,000 from Xavier Becerra's inactive campaign funds while disguising personal expenses as business expenditures.

1. Allegations and Charges:

• Williamson allegedly led a scheme to divert campaign funds intended for Xavier Becerra into personal use, among other fraudulent activities including bank fraud, wire fraud, and conspiracy to obstruct justice.

• She pleaded not guilty and was released on a $500,000 bond.

2. Fraudulent Activities:

• The scheme reportedly involved transferring funds through various entities to disguise payments, particularly to Sean McCluskie, Becerra's former chief of staff, who also faces charges.

• Between April 2022 and September 2024, Williamson and her associates allegedly took out $10,000 monthly, falsely labeled as monitoring dormant campaign accounts.

3. Luxury Expenditures Mischaracterized as Business Expenses:

• Williamson is accused of claiming over $1 million in dubious business deductions for luxurious personal purchases. This includes high-end items and lavish trips, such as:

• Designer handbags worth $15,000 and $5,800.

• A birthday trip in Mexico costing $156,302, which included yacht rentals and hotel stays.

• Various other high-value expenditures labeled as business-related, such as a $19,400 HVAC system and payments for no-show jobs for friends and family.

4. Co-Conspirators:

• Williamson’s co-conspirators include Greg Campbell, a lobbyist who has already pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges and is cooperating with investigators.

• The indictment implicates others, including family members and business associates involved in the fraudulent activities.

5. Potential Penalties:

• If convicted, Williamson faces severe penalties, including up to 20 years in prison and $250,000 fines for each count of fraud, alongside further penalties for other charges like false statements and tax fraud.

Dana Williamson's case highlights serious concerns regarding political corruption and misuse of campaign funds. As the legal proceedings unfold, the potential implications for Williamson and her associates could set important precedents regarding accountability in political finance. The ongoing investigation will determine the extent of accountability for the alleged fraudulent activities in California's political landscape.
