Ketanji Brown Jackson halts order requiring full SNAP payments, for now

Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson has temporarily stopped an order for the Trump administration to make full Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) payments by Friday. This pause will remain until the U. S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit makes a decision on the administration's appeal.

• Jackson’s ruling is not a final decision on the case's legal merits but offers temporary relief to the Trump administration.

• This situation arose amid a government shutdown that has lasted six weeks, affecting about 42 million individuals reliant on food assistance.

• A lawsuit came from cities and private groups after the USDA announced cuts to SNAP starting in November, marking the first total lapse in funding.

• U. S. District Judge John McConnell initially mandated using a $5 billion SNAP contingency fund to cover November benefits, which the administration deemed insufficient.

• McConnell later suggested transferring $4 billion from child nutrition programs to close the funding gap, prompting the administration's urgent appeal.

• The 1st Circuit's three-judge panel declined to intervene before the Supreme Court was approached.

The temporary halt by Justice Jackson ensures a wait for the First Circuit's decision while underscoring the ongoing challenges related to SNAP funding amid a prolonged government shutdown.
