Jocelyn Benson’s husband is VP of company forcing data center on Saline Township

Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s administration is fast-tracking the approval process for a large AI data center in Saline Township. Although this project faces local opposition, it has garnered support from key figures, including Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson's husband, Ryan Friedrichs. The project raises significant regulatory and environmental concerns, as well as questions about its cost to taxpayers.

1. Project Overview: The AI data center, associated with Related Companies, involves a substantial investment in Saline Township. It is touted to be the largest one-time investment in Michigan's history, covering about 575 acres of farmland. The project is poised to create thousands of jobs, including direct and indirect employment.

2. Support and Opposition: Ryan Friedrichs, a local lobbyist and husband of Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, openly supports the project. His role involves lobbying for Related Companies while Benson plans her campaign for governor in 2026. Meanwhile, many local residents oppose the project, expressing concerns over its impact on the community, agriculture, and local resources.

3. Past Controversies: Friedrichs has a controversial history, having been involved in legal scandals while employed with the city of Detroit. He has faced allegations regarding misconduct in programs, including the Motor City Match, and other related issues.

4. Legal and Regulatory Challenges: The Saline Township board previously voted against rezoning the farmland for the project, but Subsequently, Related Digital sued the township for exclusionary zoning, prompting the board to reconsider and settle to avoid potential monetary damages. This decision has not alleviated community discontent.

5. Fast-Tracking Approvals: Related Digital is working with DTE Energy to speed up regulatory approvals. DTE claims that the project will not increase costs for consumers and might even provide affordable energy solutions. However, critics are skeptical about these assertions.

6. Environmental Concerns: There are worries about the ecological implications of the data center's energy demands, especially as Michigan aims for a 100% clean energy standard by 2040. Critics question if the infrastructure can meet these targets without extending reliance on fossil fuels.

7. Regulatory Oversight: The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) is evaluating the project’s details and its alignment with state energy goals. They are tasked with ensuring that the energy needs of the data center do not adversely affect existing residential customers and that renewable energy targets are still met.

The development of the AI data center in Saline Township represents a significant opportunity for economic growth but also poses substantial regulatory, environmental, and community challenges. As the process continues, local opposition persists, and key figures in the project face scrutiny regarding their past actions and the project's potential impact on the future of the community and the state's energy strategy.
