States in the U. S. have taken away driving privileges from 5,500 commercial truck drivers who did not pass basic English tests while working in Canada, as reported by Israel Delgado Vallejo from Mexico’s Northwest Chamber of Freight Transporters. He noted that enforcement is becoming stricter after President Trump reinstated a law requiring commercial drivers to understand English for safety purposes.
Delgado Vallejo mentioned that the enforcement is expected to continue throughout the year, particularly in states like Texas, where most suspensions have occurred. About 80,000 truck drivers operate along the Mexico-U. S. border, but around 80 percent do not speak English.
The U. S. Department of Transportation has warned states like California and Washington to enforce the English requirement, threatening to withdraw federal transportation funds if they do not comply. California's Highway Patrol stated they will not revoke licenses for drivers who cannot speak English.
