2025 Budget Review Shows We Can’t Afford To Extend ‘Temporary’ Obamacare Subsidies

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has provided a review of the fiscal year that ended on September 30, revealing troubling trends about the national budget. The report indicates a significant budget deficit and ongoing issues with government spending, which have sparked debate among lawmakers.

1. Budget Deficit: The CBO reported a budget deficit exceeding $1.8 trillion for the recent fiscal year, showing a minimal decrease from the previous year. This continued high deficit raises concerns about fiscal responsibility in Congress.

2. Spending Demand from Democrats: Democrats are calling for a permanent extension of enhanced Obamacare subsidies, which is contributing to the current budget crisis. Republicans are advised to reject this demand to avoid worsening the fiscal situation.

3. Rising Revenues vs. Increased Spending: While the government did see an increase in revenues due to rising wages and tariffs, spending escalated at a comparable rate. Major spending categories increased significantly:

• Social Security: Up by $121 billion (8%)

• Medicare: Up by $72 billion (8%)

• Medicaid: Up by $52 billion (8%)

• Interest on national debt: Up by $80 billion (8%)

• Veterans Affairs: Up by $41 billion (12%)

• Refundable tax credits: Up by $26 billion (13%)

4. Cost Reduction in Certain Areas: Some areas did see a decrease in spending, such as a $234 billion reduction in the Department of Education, primarily due to changes in student loan pricing.

5. Ongoing Liabilities vs. One-Time Savings: The cuts in specific departments are viewed as one-time savings, while the increases in major spending categories represent ongoing liabilities that will contribute negatively to future budgets.

6. Challenging Fiscal Environment: The report emphasizes the precarious state of the nation’s finances, with rising debt leading to over $1 trillion in interest costs last year, marking a frightening trend for fiscal management.

7. Criticism of Subsidy Extension: The proposed extension of subsidies is criticized for being financially unsustainable, with concerns about fraud and the moral implications of funding programs that many oppose.

The CBO report highlights a deepening budget crisis driven by increasing government spending outpacing revenue growth. Lawmakers are urged to reconsider policies like the proposed extension of enhanced Obamacare subsidies to avoid exacerbating the fiscal challenges ahead. The current spending habits may lead to a more profound financial crisis if not addressed.
