House Ethics Committee Slams AOC’s Manipulation of Rules To Shield ‘Spouse's’ Financial Affairs From the Public

The House Ethics Committee has criticized Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) for a conflict regarding her partner's financial status and her use of the term "spouse. "

• The Rebuke: AOC received a warning from the House Ethics Committee for describing her partner, Riley Roberts, as both her spouse and not her spouse depending on the context. This dual interpretation allowed her to accept gifts typically reserved for legally married spouses while avoiding financial disclosure requirements.

• Met Gala Incident: The situation arose when AOC accepted a $35,000 ticket to the 2021 Met Gala for Roberts, which is allowable only for a legally married spouse. AOC and Roberts have been engaged since 2022, but they are not legally married.

• Financial Transparency: AOC's attorney explained that Roberts qualifies as her "spouse" under federal campaign finance law, which has allowed him to receive privileges generally available to congressional spouses. However, he is not required to disclose financial details, a requirement for actual spouses of lawmakers.

• Lack of Disclosure: There is limited public information about Roberts' finances, including his employment status and possible stock trades regarding companies under AOC’s jurisdiction. This lack of transparency leads to questions about potential conflicts of interest.

• Committee's Findings: The House Ethics Committee ordered AOC to repay $3,000 for the benefits derived from the Met Gala and questioned her inconsistent use of the term "spouse" for Roberts. They pointed out that she sought to exploit funding exceptions while evading accountability regarding financial disclosures.

• Reactions: Various watchdog groups and political commentators expressed concern about AOC’s approach, suggesting it undermines the ethical standards expected of public officials and unfairly benefits her partner.

AOC was ordered to donate to a charity associated with the Met Gala as part of the committee's decision. The case raises significant questions about the rules governing congressional spouses and the ethics of accepting gifts while attempting to bypass disclosure obligations. AOC's office has not publicly addressed these accusations or the implications of her relationship with Roberts.
