DOJ makes nationwide push to clean voter rolls, purging duplicates and noncitizens

The Department of Justice (DOJ) is launching a major initiative to update and clean up voter registration rolls across the United States ahead of the upcoming 2026 elections. This involves removing duplicate registrations and identifying non-citizens who may be eligible to vote illegally.

• The DOJ’s Civil Rights Division is concerned about states not complying with federal election laws, prompting the initiative. Specific states like California, Wisconsin, Utah, and New Hampshire have received notifications regarding their voter registration practices.

• Attorney General Pam Bondi emphasized the importance of fair and secure elections, stating, "we will fight to have fair and secure elections - and that begins with making our voter rolls accurate. "

• The issue of voter roll integrity has gained attention from conservative lawyers, particularly as states like Texas have reported instances of non-citizens voting.

• In a recent investigation, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton revealed over 100 non-citizens potentially cast more than 200 ballots in past elections.

• The DOJ's effort will be managed by Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon, who stated, "Clean voter rolls will help achieve that goal" of making elections secure.

• The DOJ has also threatened to withhold federal funds from Wisconsin over its failure to comply with the Helping Americans Vote Act (HAVA) that requires election commissions to address voter complaints. Dhillon criticized the Wisconsin Elections Commission for not providing a process for resolving such complaints.

• Additionally, the DOJ has requested information from Orange County, California, regarding illegal aliens on the voter rolls. The county has resisted compliance, leading the DOJ to consider legal action.

The DOJ’s national campaign aims to ensure that voter registration lists are accurate and free of duplicates or illegal entries. This initiative reflects a broader focus on election integrity as concerns about improper voting arise. States are urged to comply with federal regulations to avoid penalties, including potential loss of funding.
