‘LEGITIMATE ACT OF RESISTANCE’: Socialist Group Defends Alleged Israeli Embassy Murderer

 A faction of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), known as the Liberation Caucus, has supported an open letter claiming that Elias Rodriguez, who allegedly killed two Israeli embassy staff, was justified in his actions to prevent “genocide. ” This stance has sparked backlash from other DSA members and political figures.

• The letter was released by the Palestinian activist group Tariq El-Tahrir and was signed by the DSA Liberation Caucus. In contrast, other DSA sections condemned Rodriguez's actions.

• The letter describes Rodriguez's actions as a legitimate resistance against Israel, referring to the attack on May 21, 2025, as a response to ongoing violence against Palestinians.

• It claims that international law permits violent resistance to prevent genocide and asserts that counter-violence against "the Zionist movement" is an act of justice.

• Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo criticized the letter, calling it a hate crime and urged other mayoral candidates to denounce it.

• The DSA has over 92,000 members but has faced internal conflict over issues related to Israel and Palestine.

The incident highlights divisions within the DSA regarding violence and political perspectives on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, prompting significant public and political reactions.
