Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced significant reforms to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), resulting in the cancellation of a large majority of its programs.
• After a six-week review, Rubio declared that 83% of USAID’s programs will be canceled, affecting over 5,200 contracts that cost billions of dollars.
• Rubio stated these contracts did not benefit U. S. national interests and in some cases caused harm.
• Approximately 1,000 programs will remain, but they will now be managed under the State Department for better efficiency.
• The reforms were praised as a necessary action against perceived bureaucratic waste and misuse of taxpayer money on ineffective programs.
• Rubio credited Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency for enabling what he called "historic reform. "
• The announcement is considered a significant setback for Democrats and established politicians who supported USAID’s previous direction, which Rubio labeled as promoting a far-left agenda.
• Future aid will be directed more strategically to support American interests, moving away from funding that opposes traditional values.
Rubio's changes aim to realign USAID’s efforts to better reflect U. S. interests and reduce financial waste, marking a decisive shift in American foreign aid policy.
