On March 10, 2025, the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), led by Administrator Lee Zeldin, announced the cancellation of over 400 grants, resulting in savings of more than $1. 7 billion for taxpayers. This action is part of ongoing efforts to reduce wasteful spending in federal programs.
• Administrator Zeldin, together with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), conducted a review of spending, leading to significant budget cuts.
• This is the fourth round of grant cancellations, contributing to total savings exceeding $2 billion since Zeldin took office.
• The cancellations included various grants associated with diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts, as well as a $50 million environmental justice grant linked to the Climate Justice Alliance, which had controversial views.
• Previous rounds of cuts included the cancellation of 20 grants saving $60,958,537. 30 and 21 grants saving $116,449,761.
• The EPA is actively cooperating with other agencies to ensure proper oversight of approximately $20 billion in unallocated funds currently under investigation, frozen by a financial institution.
The EPA under Administrator Zeldin continues to focus on financial accountability and has taken significant steps to eliminate unnecessary expenditures involving grants and spending programs.
