San Diego migrant shelter closes after decrease in residents in Trump term

A migrant shelter in San Diego is closing after no new arrivals since the termination of the CBP One app on Inauguration Day. The Jewish Family Service of San Diego, which ran the shelter for over six years, announced layoffs for more than 100 employees due to changes in federal funding and policy. They have not assisted any migrants since President Trump’s inauguration day, linked to the ending of the CBP One app, which was used for asylum interviews.

The organization has not received $22 million from FEMA's Shelter and Services Program. CEO Michael Hopkins mentioned that they are prepared for these federal policy changes. The organization will continue its legal services, including support for deportation cases and DACA recipients, while enhancing its pro bono immigration services.
