Jobs Trashed: Waste Management To Fire 5,000 Whose Jobs Will Be "Automated"

Waste Management, based in Houston, is planning to reduce its workforce by around 5,000 jobs by 2026 as part of a shift towards automation and technology in its operations.

• Waste Management has about 48,000 employees and will not replace certain vacated roles, leading to job cuts.
• By 2025, approximately 1,000 positions will be affected, including the elimination of about 650 trucking jobs due to fleet modernization and a reduction of 350 jobs from plant upgrades.
• The company's strategy is to decrease reliance on labor-intensive roles, which are hard to fill due to high turnover rates, estimated at around 50% for some positions.
• CEO Jim Fish emphasized that the company is not laying off employees but is instead using attrition to manage the workforce.
• In 2024, Waste Management acquired medical waste services provider Stericycle to expand its service offerings.
The transition to automation at Waste Management reflects a broader trend in the industry, aiming to improve efficiency while addressing challenges in recruitment and employee retention.
