The Trump Administration Must Bring Moderna to Heel

Last week, journalist Alex Berenson reported that a young child died from "cardio-respiratory arrest" after receiving a dose of Moderna's Covid mRNA vaccine during its clinical trials. Despite government regulations that require reporting all trial information, the company failed to disclose this information for years while profiting significantly from its Covid vaccines.

Moderna, led by CEO Stéphane Bancel, allegedly violated federal law by not reporting death and adverse event information related to its trials to clinicaltrials.gov. The company has the obligation to share all trial results, and not revealing a child's death could lead to civil action against it for attempting to conceal crucial facts.

Pharmaceutical companies have largely avoided accountability for widespread misinformation that has resulted in numerous vaccine-related injuries. They have enjoyed protections under the PREP Act for vaccine injuries. However, those protections do not cover breaches of federal regulations or false statements.

The child's death came to light due to a European report from last year, which indicated that Moderna knew about the incident for over two years. Meanwhile, the company has continued to promote Covid vaccines for children as young as six months. Additionally, Moderna withheld data showing that children under 12 who received the vaccine experienced significantly more serious side effects than those given a placebo. The company claimed without evidence that the side effects, including the child's death, were unrelated to the vaccine.

The new Trump administration could provide a chance to hold pharmaceutical companies responsible and investigate the situation further. The FDA is tasked with enforcing trial result reporting, but past leadership has been seen as overly supportive of the pharmaceutical industry. Dr. Marty Makary, Trump's nominee for the FDA, has been a critic of the government's stance on natural immunity and has argued against vaccinating children who are already immune.

President-elect Trump has appointed Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. , known for his opposition to Covid vaccines, to lead the Department of Health and Human Services. Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, a signatory of the Great Barrington Declaration, is also among the nominees for key health positions. Furthermore, Senator Ron Johnson has indicated plans to subpoena the FDA when Republicans gain control of the Senate.

During Trump's first term, his promise to "drain the swamp" was not achieved, largely due to a bureaucracy that interfered with his agenda. The new administration now has a significant opportunity for health reform, starting with an investigation into Moderna's actions.

The Covid response has significantly impacted Trump’s presidency, raising questions about accountability, the relationship with his advisors, and the broader implications for public health. The ongoing situation highlights the pressing need for transparency and accountability in vaccine-related issues.
