I was raised by older parents who were often sick. My father spent more time in hospitals than at home. Each surgery seemed to make him worse, and although my mother was healthier, she also faced multiple hospital visits without any improvement in her health. My sister was nearly lost to the hospital during a severe health scare, and despite surviving, she continues to suffer long-term pain. I've witnessed terrible things in the medical system and have come to distrust it completely. Even simple procedures did not go as planned for my father, leading to more suffering. I've been wary of doctors for my whole life, having seen their failures and mishaps.
During my time working in a hospital, I heard patients crying out for help without response. I witnessed callous behavior from some medical staff, including jokes about patients' conditions. The healthcare system seemed indifferent to the pain and suffering of individuals, treating them more like commodities rather than people in need of care. This experience deepened my negative feelings towards the medical profession.
Currently, I am reflecting on what happened to my friend Chris Graves, who was seriously injured in a car accident. He was taken to Boston Medical Center, a place that is supposed to provide excellent medical care, but his experience there was troubling. When Chris reached out to me, he was disoriented and unable to find his belongings, like his glasses and phone. The hospital staff did not seem to care, leaving him without proper sight or communication until kind strangers helped him.
Chris received visits from friends and supporters who were concerned about his situation. They observed the inadequate care he was receiving firsthand. Despite his serious injuries, the social worker assigned to his case did not assist him in getting necessary support like Social Security benefits or medical care, even though he was seriously hurt and required rehabilitation.
Chris was ultimately discharged from the hospital without seeing a doctor for a week, which is shocking. Instead of receiving the rehab he desperately needed, he was released onto the streets, without even the most basic paperwork or guidance for his recovery. This entire experience illustrates how deeply flawed the healthcare and support systems can be for those in need.
