Media’s Latest Alito Conspiracy Theory Is Particularly Ridiculous

Even by the standards of the left-wing press's criticism of Justice Samuel Alito, recent reports have exaggerated a situation regarding his provision of a job reference for a former law clerk. Alito shared that he received a call from President-elect Donald Trump about William Levi, who was seeking a role in the government. Various media outlets, including CNN and The New York Times, depicted Alito's actions as part of a conspiracy to influence a legal case. However, it is common for judges to give references for former clerks, and ethics guidelines support this practice.

The guidelines specify that judges should not initiate contact with decision-makers about nominees but can respond to inquiries regarding their qualifications. Despite this, some media reports have inaccurately framed Alito's actions as suspicious. A notable opinion piece failed to mention that providing job references is ethical and instead focused on an unfounded conspiracy theory regarding Trump's legal battles.

The report further implies that the reference might have connections to Trump’s ongoing legal issues, including an appeal related to a trial presided over by Judge Juan Merchan. Concerns were raised about Merchan's impartiality due to his financial ties to Democratic opponents of Trump, alongside issues in the prosecution's case.

Alito clarified that he did not discuss the appeal with Trump and was unaware of it during their conversation. The left-wing media has launched a long-term campaign against conservative justices, escalating when the Supreme Court decided on the controversial Roe v. Wade case. Such efforts have led to significant threats against the safety of justices, as demonstrated by an assassination attempt on Justice Brett Kavanaugh following a leak concerning the court’s decision.

The pattern of targeting conservative justices often involves media scrutiny of their personal lives, including attacks on their families. For example, articles have criticized Alito’s wife's display of historical flags. The situation has been termed particularly absurd, adding to a long-established media push against Justice Alito and his conservative colleagues.
