Gavin Newsom Is Using Fire Fundraiser to Raise Funds for HIMSELF

Recently, Newsom and Senator Elizabeth Warren sought donations for fire relief by using fundraising posts that directed contributions through ActBlue, a Democratic fundraising platform. The issue arises because ActBlue charges a 3. 95% processing fee from each donation, which reduces the actual aid going to victims. Critics have suggested alternative donation methods, such as giving directly to organizations like the United Way, which don't have such fees.

Newsom's approach goes beyond using ActBlue. His campaign has created a site called “Californians Fire Facts,” which redirects visitors to GavinNewsom.com. This page appears focused on wildfire relief, but the donation button actually sends money to Newsom's “Campaign for Democracy,” a political action committee aimed at increasing his political power. After ActBlue's fees, funds are sent to charities only from the initial donation.

A significant concern is that donors must provide personal data, like email and phone number, when donating through Newsom's link. This information can be used for future campaign appeals. Donors may later receive messages asking for support for Newsom without realizing their initial donation did not go to wildfire relief.

The ethical issues are significant, as using a tragedy for political gain undermines trust in charitable donations. People are encouraged to evaluate where their money goes and consider donating directly to local organizations instead of through political channels.

Utilizing a crisis for political benefit is unacceptable, and it’s crucial to ensure that donations genuinely help those in need rather than serve political agendas. California deserves leaders focused on public service instead of personal gain.

If you want to help wildfire victims, skip the middleman. Here are better options:

Donate directly to local organizations. The United Way or the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation are strong choices.

Support the local fire relief funds directly. Find out which nonprofits are actively helping on the ground.

Research before clicking ‘Donate.’ Look closely at where your money is going and what organization is behind the ask.

Your dollars should provide relief, not political ammunition.
