Arsonists caught on video as LA burns; half of fires historically set by homeless

Arsonists have been seen on camera starting fires in Los Angeles, showing how crime and homelessness contribute to the city's wildfires. In 2023, City Journal reported that the Los Angeles Fire Department used around $427 million of its $854 million budget to handle homeless-related fires. A previous analysis by the Los Angeles Times indicated that more than half of the fires reported by the LAFD were linked to homelessness.

Podcaster Andrew Huberman filmed suspected arsonists setting a fire in Santa Monica, a location far from active wildfire zones. He mentioned that the fire department put out the fire before it could spread.

California Governor Gavin Newsom said a significant underpass fire, which disrupted the I-10 freeway for several days, was caused by "malice. " In response, City Councilwoman Traci Park requested a report on fires from encampments under freeways in her district, where many structures have been destroyed.

Currently, 45% of homeless individuals in the city are "service resistant," with many struggling with drug or alcohol addiction and severe mental illness.
