Over 97% of House Incumbents Won in 2024

Over 97% of House Incumbents won their reelection races in 2024, demonstrating the strong advantages of incumbency, such as fundraising power and gerrymandered districts. Kay Granger, a long-serving Congress member, has faced health issues and missed over 300 votes due to dementia while living in an assisted-care facility.

The average age of Senators in the new Congress will be 64, while the House averages at 59. A significant portion of the Supreme Court is also near or at retirement age. There is a call for term limits of three or four terms for House members and two six-year terms for Senators. As Steve Forbes noted, "A pond needs constant fresh water or it develops algae," highlighting the need for new perspectives in government.
