‘Big Food’ Lobbyists are Now Discussing How to Undermine Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s Push for a Healthier America

Lobbyists in the food and agriculture industries are actively trying to counter Robert F. Kennedy Jr. 's campaign for a healthier America. Kennedy, a former consumer rights attorney, is critical of processed foods and aims to remove unhealthy ingredients such as Yellow 5 food dye and seed oils, which he associates with obesity and inflammation. His initiative, called "Make America Healthy Again" (MAHA), has raised significant concern among fast food and snack industries. In response, these industries are holding secret meetings to strategize against his proposals.

Reports indicate that lobbyists representing major snack food companies and agribusinesses have been gathering to address the challenge posed by Kennedy's agenda. A firm called Invariant, which represents clients like McDonald's and PepsiCo, warned clients about Kennedy's growing influence, suggesting that they may face tough opposition in Congress. The memo emphasized the need for preparation for potential legislative battles.

During a recent meeting, lobbyists discussed how they could use Congress to limit Kennedy's initiatives. One lobbyist pointed out that traditional food stakeholders might try to work through the appropriations process to restrict Kennedy's proposals. Historical examples were cited, such as an incident in 2010, where Congress was influenced by industry lobbyists to classify tomato paste in frozen pizzas as a vegetable.

The discussions among lobbyists reflected concerns that Kennedy’s broad set of proposed changes could be his downfall. They suggested that if Kennedy focuses on multiple issues at once, his chances of success would be diminished. Invariant has connections to both political parties, with members having experience in both Democratic and Republican administrations.

In summary, the food industry is mobilizing to weaken Kennedy's influence and protect their interests as he pushes for significant health reforms in the American diet.
