America Was Founded as a Christian Nation

Thanksgiving reflects America's religious roots and its historical connection to Christianity. The current political landscape shows a divide: some believe religion should be absent from public life due to modern secularism, while others argue it should remain influential. This divide was highlighted during a recent presidential campaign, where Vice President Kamala Harris dismissed hecklers referencing Jesus, while J. D. Vance welcomed similar sentiments, showcasing differing views on Christian nationalism.

Critics of public Christianity often see it as a threat to a free society, a view upheld by Enlightenment thinkers who wished for religion to diminish in influence. However, dismissing public Christianity ignores America's historical identity, which is intertwined with religious values. Justice Joseph Story noted that early American colonies supported Christianity through laws and institutions, viewing public support for religion as essential for societal health.

Some argue that the First Amendment’s separation of church and state ended this support, but Story contended that the amendment was meant to prevent conflict among Christian sects rather than suppress Christianity itself. He emphasized the importance of encouraging Christianity for the wellbeing of society and maintaining moral values necessary for a functioning democracy.

Story's reflections align with George Washington’s views on the necessity of respecting both religion and morality for political success. He advocated for public acknowledgment of God's benefits, as seen in his Thanksgiving proclamations. Story further clarified that supporting religion should not equate to forcing beliefs upon individuals, affirming that government can promote Christianity while respecting freedom of conscience.

This discussion is especially relevant during Thanksgiving and amid recent elections, stressing the need to restore respect for religion in public life alongside individual freedoms.
