Macy's Shutters Union Square Location In San Francisco

 Add Macy's to the long list of Union Square retail stores that have closed recently - the department store announced this week that it would close 150 locations in the coming years, including its flagship store in San Francisco.

The store has been on its Union Square block since 1929 and will stay in operation until Macy's finds a buyer for the building.

San Francisco supervisor Aaron Peskin said he was "Devastated" by Macy's decision to downsize and "Invest in a small-format model" instead of wasting money on unproductive stores.

Macy's cited slow sales as the reason for closing so many branches, and San Francisco officials confirmed that the department store did not cite safety concerns as its reason for leaving Union Square.

San Francisco's flagship Nordstrom closed last year, and since then, department stores have exited downtown in masse.

It'll be difficult to recognize Union Square in the coming years without Macy's trademark holiday displays or towering Christmas tree that the store used to gift the city every winter.

The area used to absolutely glitter at Christmas; what a magical childhood adventure it was to take the ornamented cable car to Union Square and ice skate under the Macy's tree.
